Plans lodged to bring Drive-Thru Costa Coffee to Scotland

Walker Group and Strathleven Regeneration Company have lodged a planning application for Scotland's first drive-thru Costa Coffee at the £100m Lomondgate development in Dumbarton.

The Lomondgate Partners have submitted a proposal to West Dunbartonshire Council to build a new 1,850sq ft drive-thru, just a short drive away from Loch Lomond.

If successful, the new drive-thru is scheduled to open in Autumn 2011 and will form part of the roadside services area of Lomondgate, along with a new Premier Inn Hotel and Malt & Myre restaurant. The major mixed-use development will also feature more than 300 new homes, a 20 acre Business Park and accommodate BBC Scotland and Aggreko.

John Menzies of retail and leisure letting agents Cushman & Wakefield, said: "You could not get a better location for a Costa Coffee than the Lomondgate site which is adjacent to the A82, the main link from the Central Scotland with the West Highlands and one of the busiest trunk roads in Scotland.

"Costa Coffee will provide a welcome stop-off point for tourists travelling to and from Glasgow, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, as well as a key attraction for those who will be working at the business park, residents of the new homes at Lomondgate and workers at Aggreko and BBC Scotland.

"The fact that Whitbread has chosen Lomondgate not only for its new Premier Inn and Malt & Myre restaurant but also to trial the drive-thru Costa concept in Scotland speaks volumes about the quality of the location."

Bruce Walker, Managing Director of Walker Group, which is jointly developing the Lomondgate site with Strathleven Regeneration Company, said: "Costa Coffee is a terrific addition to the tenant mix at Lomondgate, and will perfectly compliment the proposed Tesco Express and petrol station for the roadside services area."

David Hastings, Executive Director of Strathleven Regeneration Company said: "The fact that Whitbread and the Walker Group are investing in new hotel accommodation, leisure facilities and housing at Lomondgate in difficult economic conditions is testament to the strength of Dumbarton's location. It's very welcome news that nearly 50 people have been employed to run the Premier Inn and Malt & Myre. With networked television productions such as 'Garrow's Law' and 'The Deep' being made at BBC Scotland's studios in addition to 'River City' and with Aggreko's new manufacturing facility under construction, Lomondgate is beginning to realise its economic regeneration potential. This has been made possible by the support of West Dunbartonshire Council, Scottish Enterprise and Diageo, the sustained commitment of local politicians and a resilient partnership between Strathleven Regeneration Company and the Walker Group."

Lomondgate is home to anchor tenant BBC Scotland where it films 'River City' and other national productions. Work is well underway on Aggreko's new £20m manufacturing and office facility on land adjacent to the Business Park. Whitbread has just opened its new £4.1m Premier Inn and Malt & Myre restaurant on site, creating 50 full and part-time jobs.

The £100m Lomondgate Project was launched in 2007 by Strathleven Regeneration Company (SRC) a public-private partnership established with the support of West Dunbartonshire Council, Scottish Enterprise and Diageo. SRC formed a partnership with developer, Walker Group to help deliver its plans for a mixed-use development on the site.
